Sorah Al-Fajr ( The Dawn ) - Verses Number 30

وَالْفَجْرِ ( 1 )

By the break of Day

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ( 2 )

By the Nights twice five;

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ( 3 )

By the even and odd (contrasted);

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ ( 4 )

And by the Night when it passeth away;-

هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ ( 5 )

Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ ( 6 )

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ ( 7 )

Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,

الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ ( 8 )

The like of which were not produced in (all) the land?

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ ( 9 )

And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ ( 10 )

And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?

الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ ( 11 )

(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ ( 12 )

And heaped therein mischief (on mischief).

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ ( 13 )

Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ ( 14 )

For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ ( 15 )

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ ( 16 )

But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ ( 17 )

Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ ( 18 )

Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا ( 19 )

And ye devour inheritance - all with greed,

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا ( 20 )

And ye love wealth with inordinate love!

كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا ( 21 )

Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder,

وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا ( 22 )

And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,

وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ ( 23 )

And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?

يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي ( 24 )

He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ ( 25 )

For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ ( 26 )

And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ( 27 )

(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً ( 28 )

"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!

فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي ( 29 )

"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!

وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي ( 30 )

"Yea, enter thou My Heaven!

Guarding the TongueBefore you is a chapter from the great book "Al-Adhkaar" of the Imam and great scholar of the seventh century, Abu Zakariyyah Yahya ibn Sharaf an-Nawawi. The chapter is entitled "Hifdh-ul-Lisaan" or "Guarding the Tongue." The original source, "Al-Adhkaar," is one of the prize works of Imam an-Nawawi in which he compiles and discusses the texts related to what is recommended and forbidden from speech, focusing on al-adhkaar (words of remembrance) and al-ad'iyah (supplications). In the last part of the book, as he explains, Imam an-Nawawi devotes a chapter to what is forbidden and disliked from speech, such as backbiting, gossiping, and slander. So he brings the evidences from the Qur'aan and Sunnah on the obligation of guarding the tongue from evil speech. This great work was checked and verified by Shaikh Saleem ibn 'Eed al-Hilaali and printed in two volumes. In his verification, Shaikh Saleem provides a grading for each hadeeth as well as a discussion about the reason for the hadeeth's authenticity or weakness. Due to a desire to make the e-book a source of easy reading and benefit, the verification of hadeeths have been limited to just the grade that Shaikh Saleem al-Hilaali has provided and the references of the hadeeth sources they can be found in, while abridging his discussions of certain hadeeths in some places.
